2. The nearest beaches to Olbia
Pittulongu
The go-to beach for anyone staying in Olbia: a long stretch of sand north of town, divided into sections such as La Playa and Lo Squalo, with beach clubs, bars and restaurants. It is also the easiest to reach without a car, thanks to the summer bus from the centre.
Bados
Just past Pittulongu towards Golfo Aranci, Bados is a smaller and usually less crowded beach, ideal if you want some peace a few minutes from town.
Porto Istana
South-east of Olbia, Porto Istana is made up of several light-sand coves facing Tavolara island: one of the most photographed views in the area.
3. Day trips: beaches not to miss
Golfo Aranci
North of Olbia, Golfo Aranci has several light-sand beaches with clear water, less than half an hour from the centre.
Cala Brandinchi and San Teodoro
To the south, near San Teodoro, Cala Brandinchi is famous for its turquoise water and white sand. It gets very busy in high season, so arrive early.
Costa Smeralda
Capriccioli, Liscia Ruja and the other Costa Smeralda coves are about 30-40 minutes by car. A beach day here combines well with a stroll around Porto Cervo.
Tavolara island
Boats leave from Porto San Paolo, south of Olbia, for Tavolara island and its marine protected area: a perfect full-day excursion.
4. To the beach without a car
In summer ASPO, Olbia's local transport company, runs a dedicated bus from the centre to Pittulongu beach. Timetables, stops and tickets change from year to year: check the latest information on the official ASPO website or at the tourist office before you go.
For the more distant beaches, such as Cala Brandinchi or the Costa Smeralda, you will need a rental car or an organised excursion. If you arrive by car, Hotel Cavour has private parking and provides the ZTL permit: leave the car at the hotel in the evening and explore the centre on foot.
Remember: in Sardinia it is forbidden to take sand, shells or pebbles from the beaches. Respect protected areas and take your rubbish with you.
